Paauhau - Hamakua
Hawaii
Villa Paolina is Italian architectural artistry at its finest and is sited on 105.6 acres of verdant Hamakua Coastline on the Big Island of Hawaii. Built by Italian siblings for their mother to live in Hawaii, the result is a monumental feat of construction and a home of rare and great beauty. 4,527 square feet of living area consisting of 4 suites, a hotel-sized kitchen with a butler’s pantry and 2,240 square feet of covered lanai of marble for a total of 6,764 square feet under roof. After a 2-year restoration project, every detail, material, touch has been completed with grace, authenticity, and elegance. The design drawings illustrate better than any words the castle, fortress-like construction of the home: the Villa sits on a 2’ deep reinforced concrete foundation poured all in one day. This equates to having a 7,000 square foot concrete ‘barge’ anchored to the house. The structure is composed of reinforced concrete columns attached to the slab at the base and then to reinforced square concrete beams at the top which connects all the columns. The columns, beams and arches of concrete are all 16”x16” deep and also poured in place. The roof trusses are galvanized steel covered by a richly colored terracotta tile in stark contrast to the off-white hand applied plaster of the exterior 8” concrete walls. The Italian influence is obvious however of special note is the 12’ ceilings, Botticino marble floors, delicately hand painted doors, closets and cabinets, the tile mosaics and sculpted marble cornices in the bathrooms, and the marquetry cabinet doors in the kitchen, all from Italian artisans. 180-degree coastline views, majestic Mauna Kea and across the channel to Maui and the tip of Haleakala. This northern coastline of Hamakua sits below the expansive slopes of Mauna Kea in an area known for sunny weather and moderate rainfall referred to as the ‘banana belt’; an absolute must see to appreciate the beauty and rarity.
