So you just found out you will be stationed in Hawaii! How exciting!! Now the planning starts, here are some important things for you to know.
Where To Live?
The climate on Oahu is pretty much the same year-round--a wonderful 80-85 degrees during the day and 70-75 at night. However, the East side (Windward side) is a bit cooler and has more rain, especially in the winter, which makes it very lush and green. On the other hand, the West side (Leeward side) of Oahu is a bit more hot and dry. Central Oahu is a bit of a mix of both. For climate information: http://alohaisles.com/oahu/weather.html
Tripler Army Medical Center, Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hickham Airforce Base & Camp Smith are located in the middle of the island. Nearby neighborhoods include Halawa, Aiea and Pearl City.
Schofield Army Base & Wheeler Army Airfield are in Central Oahu, but closer to the North Shore. Nearby neighborhoods include Mililani, Wahiawa, Waialua, Waikele, and Waipio.
Kaneohe Marine Base is located on the East side and nearby neighborhoods include Kaneohe & Kailua.
Ewa Beach, Royal Kunia, Kapolei and Makakilo are very popular neighborhoods on Oahu as well. Buyers tend to be drawn to these areas for newer homes and lower prices.

Oahu Real Estate and Rentals:
The median home price on Oahu as of September 2012 is $664K for single family and $300K for condos/townhome -- and prices are on the rise. Now is a great time to take advantage of your VA home loan benefit and the record-low interest rates. In most cases, it will cost you the same to rent as to own on Oahu since rental prices are very high here compared to the mainland.
To start the process and apply for your VA home loan:

If you have pets that you will be bringing with you it is important to know that Hawaii is a rabies-free state. This means you'll need to follow strict guidelines beginning 120 days before your arrival, in order to bring your furry friend to the island without getting stuck in quarantine, which can last up to 120 days. http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/info.
