A new road work project has recently began on Kahekili Highway in Kaneohe starting at Haiku Road to Hui Iwa Road. State crews are working between 9:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday to restripe the Kahaluu bound lanes to add a third lane.
The new lane will help ease the rush hour traffic congestion until the state can widen the highway. The state is rumored to permanently widen the highway, but that is not expected to happen for at least three years.
For those north shore and east side residents that use Kahekili for their daily commute, they will have to be patient for the next couple weeks during the road work and extra traffic. Drivers are encouraged to use Kamehameha Highway for a faster route to Kaneohe.
I currently live in Kahaluu and my family and I am directly effected by this road project. We have to leave extra early to get to work and take the long way around Kamehameha Highway. This detour around Kahekili requires more time, but offers breathtaking views of Kaneohe Bay and He’eia Kea Pier. Listening to my favorite Pandora radio station and seeing gorgeous ocean views on my way to work isn’t really too bad! Lucky we live Hawaii!
