Ko Olina: "Place of Joy"

As part of an original royal land division, Ko Olina was once a favorite destination among Hawaii’s Ali’i, or royalty. The name Ko Olina is Hawaiian for “Place of Joy” and it truly is blessed with some of the most amazing scenery and coastline of all the islands.

Today's resort community of Ko Olina covers 642 acres of land on the southwest point (Leeward) of Oahu. Removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, Ko Olina has become one of the most attractive destinations for island locals and visitors alike. Master-planned by Jeff Stone of The Resort Group, Ko Olina consists of four beautiful man-made lagoons and two private coves stretching over approximately 1 ½ to 2 miles.

Ko Olina is home to six separate communities: Kai Lani, Ko’olina Beach Villas, Ko’olina Fairways, Ko’olina Hillside Villas, Ko’olina Kai Golf Estates & Villas and Coconut Plantations. Each community comes with their own amenities such as a swimming pool, BBQ, spa, recreation center and some are lucky enough to have golf course or ocean views.

Ko Olina also offers hotel resort and timeshare opportunities with the Ihilani JW Marriott Resort & Spa (hotel only), Aulani Disney Resort & Spa and the Marriott Vacation Club.

There are many activities in Ko Olina to enjoy. There’s the Ko’olina Marina for sea goers, and snorkeling and dolphin watching. Take in a round of golf at the Ko Olina Golf Club (home of the 2012 LPGA Lotte Championship), where the Ted Robinson-designed course features picturesque ocean views. Immerse yourself in some traditional Hawaiian culture at Paradise Cove’s luau. You can even get married at the Ko Olina Chapel Place of Joy, an expansive setting for an unforgettable experience!

I have enjoyed Ko Olina since the beginning stages of its growth. My father owned a townhome in Ko Olina Fairways when there wasn’t much around except for the golf course, the Ihilani, the lagoons and marina. I used to walk to the lagoons early in the morning, go for a swim and even pick plumeria flowers on the way home to make leis for my nephew’s Boy Scout leaders. Now, I still enjoy walking and taking my sons swimming at Ko Olina every weekend and I'm a member of the Ladies 9 Hole League at Ko’olina Golf Club.
